A new ticket today to talk about
Warrior
Mirage is a bounty hunter. It survives thanks to his intelligence and his skills in combat: she never misses its target. His new mission brings him into the shadowy world of witches, where the force does not help him deal with magic. Miryo is a witch who failed his initiation rite. Now she knows he exists in this world a being who looks like him as a sister: Mirage. To control his powers and become a witch and a witch, Miryo has only one solution: its dual track and destroy it. "
(Eclipse editions) One, Mirage, bounty hunter, has a strong character and determination limits.
The other Miryo, the witch is more in reflection ... One has the body language.
The other, that of the mind.
The two are forced to meet, we know from the first pages, and look forward then to attend this meeting.
The novel is also divided into two parts: one in which the sisters are separated and live their separate ways. We then learn to know them, their qualities, their defects, their doubts, but also their close relatives and traveling companions ... This first part is also an opportunity for the writer, we discover this world, so rich, she has invented. We learn to understand the complex hierarchy of Witches, for example, but also the modus operandi of hunters. (Mirage which is a part). The story contains beautiful descriptions and writing is quality. However, this first part is sometimes too slow, and we fear a suite in the same rhythm.
... But this is not the case.
No, in the second part of the novel, things are taking shape, the elements meet, the answers become clear. And the pace is accelerating ...
Too ...
Yes, this change of pace is far too radical for my taste. Some important elements of the story then go to "trap", preventing us from enjoying the psychology of the characters and understand some key book.
What a pity!
Yes, because the ideas are good, the writing is beautiful (some passages of "prayers" or dances are full of poetry), the characters are interesting.
But some crucial elements of the plot virtually unnoticed in the flood of words and action of this second part of the novel.
Finally, the end itself loses its flavor. I actually
almost lost his grip on the story at times.
... This book
Marie Brennan has been a little disappointed, in a nice discovery. (Paradoxically, me?)
I'm not sure I want to read more, for now ... But maybe my opinion will be changed before its release in March 2011!
The cover above is the suite (and end, since it is a diptych)
"Witch
. (U.S. version)
Ps: A big congratulations to Editions Eclipse, I find, do a great job of presenting their books. Indeed, a bookmark is attached to each book and the summary is not on the 4th of cover upon (which can fully enjoy the visual one), but in a folding procedure.
Note for My Warrior: 3 / 5
